Osteopathic/Manual Medicine

Osteopathic medicine is guided by three central principles: the body should be treated as a whole unit, including its connection to mind and spirit; structure and function are interrelated; and the body has a natural inclination to heal itself.

Prevention and wellness are central to osteopathy. Doctors of Osteopathy (DOs) complete educational training similar to allopathic doctors (MDs) and are similarly licensed to practice a full scope of medicine in any specialty of choice.

Manual medicine can help change the resting tension in a muscle or tendon, “reset” a trigger point, alter tension or torque within a ligament or fascial plane, change alignment or asymmetry of bones or joints, help address structures that may be impinging on nerves, and support lymphatic flow, visceral function, cerebrospinal fluid flow, and immune function.

To schedule an appointment, call our toll-free scheduling service at (844) 747-0474.

What Is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine?

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs), like Doctors of Medicine (MDs), are fully licensed physicians in the United States who can practice medicine and surgery in all specialties.

As part of their medical training, DOs receive specialized education in the musculoskeletal system, including the interconnected relationships between nerves, muscles, fascia, bones, organs, and the circulatory and lymphatic systems.

DOs practice in all areas of medicine, including primary care, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and surgery. Some DOs specialize in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), while others integrate OMM into their specialty care.

Learn more at the American Osteopathic Association .

What Is Osteopathic Manual Medicine?

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a hands-on approach performed by physicians trained in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). It emphasizes whole-person care and focuses on restoring balance and function within the body.

Physicians trained in OMM develop refined palpation skills to assess areas of restriction or dysfunction. Treatment is designed to improve mobility, reduce pain, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

What Does Treatment Look Like?

OMM treatments involve a range of hands-on techniques, from gentle, subtle methods to more direct approaches such as stretching, joint articulation, and guided movement.

Treatments may address muscles, joints, ligaments, fascia, organs, the nervous system, and lymphatic flow. Each session is tailored to the individual and their needs at the time of the visit.

Common Techniques

  • High-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA)
  • Muscle energy
  • Counterstrain
  • Myofascial release
  • Lymphatic techniques
  • Visceral manipulation
  • Balanced ligamentous tension
  • Cranial osteopathic techniques

What to Expect During a Visit

During your visit, your physician will review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Treatments are typically performed while lying comfortably on a treatment table.

OMT is generally gentle and should not be painful. Responses to treatment vary, and benefits may continue to develop in the days following your visit.

How to Prepare

Wear comfortable clothing, such as athletic attire. You may be asked to remove shoes or belts during treatment.

At UC San Diego, naturopathic doctors (NDs) work collaboratively with physicians and other members of your care team to provide integrative, evidence-informed care tailored to your individual health needs.

What Is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of illness rather than simply treating symptoms. Care plans are individualized and may incorporate nutrition, lifestyle counseling, botanical medicine, and other supportive therapies.

Trained specialists at UC San Diego offer massage therapy — inpatient and outpatient — to promote healing in the body through increased circulation, joint mobility, improved muscle tone, and to help ease tension, stress, spasms, and pain.

Physicians at UC San Diego work closely with massage therapists to coordinate an individualized treatment plan, which may be for an injury or part of your plan of care for conditions such as anxiety, headaches, neck, back, or nerve pain, muscle or joint pain/injury, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues, fibromyalgia, insomnia, myofascial pain syndrome, digestive disorders, or many other conditions.

Types of Massage and Bodywork

Below are descriptions of the types of massages that our therapists may suggest for you:

Acupressure

“Acupuncture without the needles,” this therapy stimulates meridian points along the body with pressure, incorporates various stretching techniques, and encourages breathing to reduce pain, eliminate fatigue, promote digestion, improve circulation, and create emotional balance.

Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ)

A gentle form of acupressure therapy that uses light finger pressure over specific points on the body while fully clothed. JSJ restores the flow of energy, which may be blocked due to illness or pain. JSJ is beneficial for a variety of conditions including acute and chronic pain, increasing immune function, eliminating fatigue, reducing stress, and improving digestion. Self-help techniques may also be taught.

Swedish Massage

The most common type of massage in the U.S. Swedish massage works out muscle tension and adhesions, opens the lymphatic system to improve metabolism, promotes the removal of bodily toxins and waste, and encourages a healthy immune system.

Shiatsu

Japanese “finger pressure” that stimulates points along the body with deep pressure to maintain physical and mental well-being, treat disease, and alleviate discomfort. Shiatsu reduces pain and fatigue, promotes digestion, and supports overall circulation.

Tui Na

A 2,000-year-old Chinese acupressure technique that uses rhythmic compression and various stretching techniques along points and channels of the body to establish a harmonious flow of energy. Tui Na reduces pain and enhances physical vitality and emotional well-being.

Acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine is an ancient system of medicine that has many applications in the modern world. By targeting the body's energy system, or "chi," clinicians seek to balance the body's structural and functional systems.

Acupuncture is a 3,000-year-old healing technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 1997, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) documented and publicized acupuncture's safety and efficacy for treating a wide range of conditions. Acupuncture is now covered by many insurance policies and is used most broadly to relieve pain.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture improves the body's functions and promotes natural self-healing by stimulating specific anatomic sites — commonly referred to as acupoints. The most common method is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin. Pressure, heat, or electrical stimulation may further enhance the effects. Other techniques include manual massage, moxibustion (heat therapy), cupping, and the application of topical herbal medicines and liniments.

Traditional Chinese Medicine describes the body in terms of two opposing forces: yin and yang. Energy called "qi" (pronounced "chee") flows along pathways called meridians. When this flow is blocked — like water behind a dam — it can lead to pain, loss of function, or illness. Acupuncture releases blocked qi and stimulates the body's natural healing response through the nervous, endocrine, immune, cardiovascular, and digestive systems.

What Happens During a Treatment?

Your acupuncturist will begin by reviewing your health history, then examine your tongue's shape, color, and coating, feel your pulse, and perform any additional physical assessments needed. Using these unique assessment tools, a proper treatment plan will be recommended for your particular condition.

You will lie comfortably on a treatment table while precise acupoints are stimulated across various areas of your body. Most people feel no or minimal discomfort as the fine needles are gently placed and retained for five to thirty minutes. During and after treatments, people commonly report feeling very relaxed.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The frequency and number of treatments differ from person to person. Some people experience dramatic relief in the first treatment. For complex or long-standing chronic conditions, one to two treatments per week for several months may be recommended. For acute problems, eight to ten visits in total is typical.

An individualized treatment plan — including the expected number of treatments — will be discussed during your initial visit.

Choosing the Right Acupuncturist

We've made it easy by hand-selecting the very best practitioners from the community to join our team at the UCSD Center for Integrative Medicine. Acupuncturist licensure is regulated at the state level — all of our acupuncturists are licensed by the State of California Acupuncture Board and have years of clinical experience.

The best way to discover if acupuncture is right for you is to schedule a visit at the location most convenient for you: Scripps Ranch, La Jolla, or Hillcrest.
